There are vast catacombs below the streets of Paris, and a new horror film delves into what might lurk within those ancient, foreboding tunnels. The horror movie As Above, So Below, opening this week, isn't just set inside the catacombs beneath Paris; it was almost entirely filmed there. The Paris Catacombs are AWESOME, the horror movie is SHIT ~ the jaded viewer. So I vaguely remember seeing this Catacombs movie on Showtime late at night a few years back. I never thought anything about it but I figured I'd watch because I had a crush on Shannyn Sossamon and I mean it had fuckin PINK in it. Honestly, I couldn't tell you if it was scary or hell what ending was it. All I remember is that there should have been no way kids would be able to throw a rave in the fuckin Paris, France Catacombs. I mean this shit is holy and sacred. How could this go un- fuckin- detected? So here is your brief history lesson of the Paris Catacombs via a Lions Gate trailer. It's true that Paris ran out out of places to bury their dead and it seems millions of bodies and bones ended up here. As I couldn't read French I'm not too familair with the history but look it's a Wikipedia article! But I must say being in there is spooky as fuckin hell. I waited about an hour and a half to get in because you know decorated bones and being underneath Paris is a pure tourist attraction. Once in, you descend a circular staircase that seems to go on and on. Once down, tight narrow passages are dimly lit and your are actually walking underneath the city streets of Paris. It's pretty tight and if you're claustrophobic you're gonna have a bad time. Probably tunnels to dig into the actually cemataries. No flash photography is allowed but it's a pure scene straight out of a horror movie. First up some odd looking stone castle. I like to think this was created by some bored Frenchman who liked hanging out in tunnels. Skulls, bones and more skulls arranged in the most gothic way possible. Seems like the living like playing with the dead in the 1. Bones piled 6- 8 feet high and in the middle are more skulls. God bless these poor souls. You weren't allowed to touch the bones as scary men with flashlights would yell at you in French if you did. The fact that you were in a crypt should have made everybody feel uneasy. But alas, this tourist hub had a baby in a stroller, annoying Americans and everybody (including myself) gawking at the skulls and taking pictures with i. Phones and cameras. And we conclude with this wall of skulls. My only other experience seeing catacombs was when Indiana Jones found the knight's tomb in Venice Italy in The Last Crusade. I don't know what I was thinking when I headed down there but I knew it would be a helluva sight. Surely a horror movie could be made about being stuck underneath Paris, in dark Catacombs with unseen forces trying to kill you. But one does not need to make a movie such as this. Seeing real life places that may have been on a National Geographic channel is pretty awesome. I highly recommend it if you find yourself in Paris. Getting out was quite an ordeal in itself. Once you're done hanging out with the dead, you have to walk up another circular staircase that got me winded and dizzy. Truly this is where we Americans fail. Exercise is not our pastime. You end up on the other side of Paris and we were a bit lost when we got out. Though you'd think we'd have exited through the gift shop, though this time it was right across the street from us. The Paris Catacombs are simply spooky as they are mesmerizing. No horror movie could ever get it right. Visit them if you ever get a chance. Just please don't watch the movie. Officially the world’s longest running stage show, The Mousetrap celebrated both it’s 6. The Mousetrap is a classic murder mystery play by Agatha Christie and has its origins in a real- life murder case in 1. The production is famed for having a twist ending, which the audience are asked to keep secret so that the show is not ruined for future audiences. Set in the early 5. Monkswell Manor, the play centres around a mysterious string of murders in London and in the Manor itself. Due to adverse weather conditions, the Manor becomes sealed off to the outside world and it doesn’t take long for the guests to realise that they are snowed in with a murderer. As panic ensues, suspicions are high and everyone at the manor becomes a suspect. Guests start dropping like flies whilst those left alive try to solve the mystery of the murderer’s identity. The play keeps the audience on the edge of their seats from start until finish and ends with an unforeseen twist! Those who enjoy a good murder mystery will thoroughly enjoy this classic “whodunnit.”Child Friendly? The trap that is credited as the first patented lethal mousetrap was a set of spring-loaded, cast-iron jaws dubbed 'Royal No. A mousetrap (Spanish: ratonera. However there are no scenes of a particularly violent nature on stage and there is little to no offensive language, so the play is unlikely to offend. Older children, especially those who love reading, may enjoy the mystery of the play. Please note that children under the age of 5 are not allowed in the St Martin’s Theatre. The current West End cast of The Mousetrap. The Mousetrap - On tour. The Mousetrap is famous around the world for being the longest running show of any kind in the history of British theatre – with almost 2. To celebrate 6. 0 incredible years on stage, it. One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve- shredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed. In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner. Behind The Scenes With The Cast Of The Mousetrap. If there’s one West End play that needs no introduction, it’s The Mousetrap. Agatha Christie’s fabled whodunit was predicted by its author to run for about six months following its 1. London home at the Ambassadors Theatre in 1. St Martin’s Theatre and has become internationally famous as the world’s longest running play. There’s more to it than just its legendary longevity though. As might be expected from Christie, The Mousetrap is a richly entertaining murder mystery in the classic vein. It’s refreshed annually by a new cast and director and maintained by a passionate and dedicated creative team. Recently arrived in the living room of The Mousetrap’s stately guesthouse Monkswell Manor are Daniel Crowder, Hannah Robertson, Bill Ilkley and Will Jennings, who play Giles and Mollie Ralston, Major Metcalf and Christopher Wren. They’ll continue in the play into 2. Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, Ian Talbot. It was my pleasure to hunker into a well- worn sofa with this convivial cast backstage at the St Martin's, where they gave me a privileged peek into the workings of one of the world’s great theatrical institutions. Is being cast in The Mousetrap different from being cast in an 'ordinary' play? DANIEL CROWDER: Absolutely. It’s a piece of history. I spent years walking past the theatre to see who’s in it, and now other actors will be walking past and going, 'Ooh, Dan Crowder’s in it'. So yeah, I feel very much a part of something special. I feel very proud of it. BILL ILKLEY: Most actors have heard a lot about it and most of us had seen it. If there’s a possibility of doing it you have a look at the play, so you arrive with a bit of knowledge. The first meeting is on the side of the stage where we are now, and the first read- through takes place on the set. Immediately you’re thrown into the life of the play, and spend your two weeks’ rehearsals actually on set. For me, it was incredible to get the call and step into The Mousetrap. My mum had been going on about it going on tour and getting very excited; she’s a huge Agatha Christie fan. So when I got the call I thought, Gosh, mum’s going to be very pleased because she’s been going on about it for the last two weeks. WILL JENNINGS: Firstly, it doesn’t feel like a job because it’s my hobby. I can’t quite believe someone’s willing to pay me to do it, so I feel very lucky. On top of that, it’s something to tell the grandkids, that you were once in The Mousetrap, because people all over the world have heard of it and it’s still the Guinness world record holder for longest- running play. It’s definitely something to be proud of. Having just walked onto the set of Monkswell Manor, I can vouch for how atmospheric it is. I got a real shudder of history and place. Was it the same for you at first? BI: Immediately. And some of the stage management team have been working on the show for six, seven, eight years, so you can find out information very quickly. They like to introduce you by pointing out that the clock on the mantelpiece on the set is an original that’s been in the production for all 6. The wind machine over there is the other original prop. DC: Because of modern technology, when you tell friends that a lot of the sound cues are live they don’t quite believe it. The snow drop, the wind, the door slams; it’s people manipulating things backstage and that’s really exciting. I can’t get over going in the Snow Room. I go in three times a show – it’s like being at Disneyland. BI: The play begins as a snowstorm hits Monkswell Manor, so we get our hats, scarves, coats, gloves and bags on and step into the Snow Room over there. The ASM knocks on the door, turns on the machine, you get doused in this foamy snow stuff and thirty seconds later you’re on stage. With other shows, you just don’t have that kind of history. You’ve still got Deryck Guyler’s voice from the original production coming over the radio too. DC: Yes we have, but you know, it feels like a very fresh production. Ian’s certainly put a new slant on it; he’s chosen new sound cues and chopped the dialogue around a bit. Exactly how much leeway does a new director have when they come to the play? BI: I was surprised how much free rein Ian was given. I thought he would have had more constraints from the management, but he brings a huge wealth of experience with him and has a great reputation as a director, so that freedom is probably part and parcel of the fact that somebody of his calibre is directing the piece. I think the management respect that. DC: There are certain exits and entrances that have to be obeyed because of quick changes or whatever, but what happens in between in completely up to you – which is a very big ask for a fortnight’s rehearsal. That’s not a lot of time. Two weeks is no time at all - that must be pressured in the extreme. DC: It was incredible, the pressure, especially when you open to a big audience and you’ve never done it in front of anyone but Ian. But when you know you’re going to be doing it for ten months, you think, it’ll grow during the run. HR: We ran Act 1 with no scripts on Day 2 of rehearsals, which none of us could believe. We just went, right, let’s do it. It wasn’t brilliant, but we got through it. We were all ready for it to be a very short process so we’d done a lot of work beforehand. You must get to know your characters pretty quickly then. Can you tell me a bit about them? DC: Giles was a lawyer before he started this venture, before the play begins. So he packed in being a lawyer and married Mollie a year ago. She decided she wanted to run a guest house after inheriting the house and he’s up for it; a change of life. That’s what happens at the start of the play. HR: Mollie is a brilliant part to be allowed to play; I’m really enjoying it. As an actress there’s a lot of pressure to be good for The Mousetrap but also, Mollie’s got to keep the house very well and she’s opening it as a guesthouse. As the actress playing her there are a lot of things to test her, but a lot of love and excitement as well. WJ: I play Christopher Wren, a young man who’s an architect, and who’s a little bit bonkers. He seems to like interior design, old antiques, and he likes Mollie as well, ’cause she’s nice. He likes friendly jolly people, so he doesn’t necessarily like Giles all that much. BI: All we know about Major Metcalf is that he’s a retired Army officer. He’s presumably been all over the place but he only talks about being stationed in Edinburgh. He lives in Leamington and made his booking at Monkswell Manor from there. As with the other characters, there’s a great twist for him, which I won’t reveal now. The one thing they all have in common is they’re all hiding something, which is all part of the intrigue and the cleverness of Agatha Christie’s writing. They’re characters from a warmer, fuzzier era. Is it nice to become these urbane people, as a kind of escape from the franticness of modern life and manners? WJ: Yes, it is. They all speak in a structured way. There are certain phrases that keep appearing that we don’t use today. To call something 'perfectly horrid' is nice to do. It’s to the point – there’s no umming and aah- ing. I don’t know whether that’s just the way it was written, or whether people just spoke in well- constructed sentences, but they’re nice words to say in a nice language. Similarly, The Mousetrap’s ideal of England, which was already a bit nostalgic even in 1. Why do you think that is? Is there more of a need for it in the digital age? HR: As someone who’s completely surrounded by technology, I think there definitely is. There’s a need to be reminded of a time when we didn’t all have our i. Phones and everything. It reminds you of a simpler life, and it makes all the problems during the show completely different; we’d sort everything out in a completely different way now. Are you Agatha Christie fans yourselves? BI: Dan bought us all a short story by Agatha Christie as a first night present, so we’ve all got one - there must be at least eight or ten stories knocking around. DC: I did. Before I started rehearsals I read a book about the eleven days when Agatha Christie went missing. It was very informative about her early life, so I went on ebay and ordered a stack of books for first night presents. It’s well- known that The Mousetrap attracts international audiences, but is there anything approaching a typical audience member? HR: It’s quite broad. You even get grandparents bringing their grandchildren, who can be very young. Bless them, they’re really trying. I’ve heard some really cute comments from little ones. There was a little boy recently who said, 'Oh yes, I thought that was going to happen!' (laughs). What are your favourite things about being in the show? DC: Stability – having a job for a year is very nice, and it’s just a joy to be able to perform with this company. Ian Talbot, who I’ve worked with before, has put together a very nice group of people to act with, and the audience on Saturday night were really up for it. They thought it was funny and thrilling, and all those aspects of a play that’s well structured. BI: A lot of it is the tradition and what it evokes in people when they know you’re in it, which is lovely. When I was first asked to do it I was really excited and really looking forward to it, but I thought 'are people going to look down on this at all?'. But actually it’s been the total opposite. HR: I’ve had exactly the same. People, fellow actors, people who I really thought, this isn’t going to be their thing, have come backstage with a surprised look on their faces going, 'We absolutely loved that. I can’t believe it’s taken us so long, and you being in it, for us to actually come and see it'. So why should people come and see it? WJ: Because it’s highly whimsical and profoundly unpretentious. BI: Unlike that statement. So come and find out whodunnit! For more information and to book tickets for The Mousetrap at St Martin’s Theatre, click here.
